Our Epic Human Olympic Flag!

Wow, what a way to finish a Golden Well Done Assembly, it looked impressive on the ground, but when the overhead video and pictures were seen it looked even better!  Well done to pupils and staff for a wonderful show!

Thanks must go to John Mayock and Nadia Williams, they really added to the day - seeing John's medals and holding Usain Bolt's record-breaking shoes really inspired the children, and we are all really excited about cheering on our school's adopted Olympian Nadia.  Fingers crossed for her big day - August 3rd and let us hope she can qualify for the Olympic final on August 5th.  This is how the News Guardian reported the wonderful event:

PUPILS have welcomed the homecoming of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, by creating a special ‘human Olympic flag’ on their school field.

The children from Holystone Primary School, North Tyneside were joined by British middle distance runner John Mayock, who has competed in three Olympic Games and triple jumper Nadia Williams. John also presented ‘Golden Well Done’ certificates to some of the pupils.

The ‘human Olympic flag’ event marks the start of a term of activities leading up to the games, beginning after Easter.

To make the flag, the 450 pupils had to line up on the field, in their Olympic ring coloured t-shirts, and follow instructions from their teachers. Children from the schools nursery were also involved, dressing in white to form the edge of the flag display.

The event also celebrated a term of work and achievements, with the distribution of ‘Golden Well Done’ certificates. Golden Well Done certificates are handed out at the end of each school term to those pupils who’ve done exceptionally well, in a range of areas.

Head teacher Stephen Baines said: “We thought the human flag would be a really interesting, interactive and innovative way to get the children excited about the impending Olympics. This will be the first Olympic games that many of our pupils will be aware of, and it makes it extra special that we are the host country. Once we return from the Easter break, we only have one term left to gear up for the games, so we wanted to do something special to recognise that. We’re delighted that John Mayock has been able to join us, to inspire and motivate the children, and to share his own Olympic experiences with us.”
